Summer Solstice
Wednesday, June 20 4:09 PM PDT
Wouldn’t you know it, those crazy Gemini twins are giving us TWO New Moons in Gemini this year – one at 0º (with the side dish of the solar eclipse last month) and now this one at 28º Gemini the day before the Summer Solstice! The intensity window continues. The Sun and Moon will be opposite the Galactic Center at 27º Sagittarius – always a source of increased downloads from the extremely energized black hole at the heart of our galaxy. Major star systems seem to be called upon recently to interact with the evolution unfolding on our beautiful planet. The Pleiades was aligned with the solar eclipse, Betelgeuse in Orion is aligned in this New Moon, and Sirius is influencing the Sun on Full Moon July 3. We are experiencing support and high frequency interactions with our cosmic partners who have always been part of our spiritual inheritance if judged by the myths and legends and temples of our ancient ancestors. Much care is needed for the body as we feel the adjustments in our sleeping patterns, sensitivities (some are hypersensitive, others sluggish), relationships, outer circumstances, etc.
The coming New Moon/Equinox period of June 19-20 is powerful in its proximity to many other powerful shifts. The long awaited first exact square of Uranus and Pluto is June 24 at 8º Aries/Capricorn. This is the first of seven squares with two per year (spring and fall) through 2014 and the last in spring 2015. Our second Uranus/Pluto square this year is Sept 18. This square is related to the huge social/political revolution that took place in the mid-60’s when Uranus/Pluto started this cycle when they were conjunct in Virgo. The Vietnam War, massive race riots, street demonstrations, back-to-the-land movements, Moon landings, the influence of the Black Panther Party, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Jr., The Beatles/Rolling Stones, birth control, long hair, women’s liberation, affirmative action – so many radical shifts away from the hunkered down safety that the previous generation of the 50’s who had born the burden of World War II had been so eager to create. A major and costly schism was created across dinner tables, as the older generation was unable to cross that invisible line into the Age of Aquarius. The generations were split and the youth relinquished the counsel of their elders in exchange for sex, drugs and rock n’ roll. Now, almost 50 years later we come to the natural culmination of any conjunction of two planets – the first opening (or waxing) square. A crisis point when a reassessment of issues requires definitive action to be taken.
The last time Uranus and Pluto (in Aries/Cancer) were squared was in the Great Depression of 1932, but there is a fundamental difference in the square then and the square now. The Depression was characterized by a closing (or waning) square – one that suggests a major crisis where the debt of what was left undone in the cycle is due and must be paid immediately. Our current square holds more redefining, growth energy after we survive the actual challenging experience of this 3-year, 7 squares of Uranus/Pluto period. Think of the youth leaving the influence of home and family – innocent, eager and entering the larger world of society to redefine themselves. Major cultural choices are being made here and now. The old ways must be relinquished and the unfamiliar innovative and creative must be embraced. In the 60’s, there were few elders who crossed the line into the new age, but now, our amazingly heart-centered, egalitarian young people are ringed by a conscious group of Boomer/elders who honor and support their vision for the future. These young people came in wired to create change and embrace diversity on all dimensions.
Uranus/Pluto is the major player in this New Moon cycle, but Jupiter made a shift in sign from Taurus to Gemini on June 11 and will be in that sign for about a year lending its expansive energies to the areas of communication, our mental thought constructs, bringing conscious awareness to the way we think and communicate and showing us how our thoughts mold three dimensional physical reality.
Also, on June 25, the day after the Uranus/Pluto square, Saturn goes direct after four months of encouraging review and weighing of our options and commitments. Slowly things will begin to move forward until Saturn reaches its original retrograde point October 1 (29º Libra) and then quickly Saturn shifts into Scorpio for a couple of years. Since late 2009, Saturn exalted in Libra has brought a balance to the impulsive energy of Uranus in Aries and magnified the work that our relationships with self and others were needing. Saturn in Scorpio has the potential for deep transformative healing and evoking strong truth and revealing that strengthens intimacy. Focused and disciplined power will be available if not sideswiped by the lower nature reactions of emotional manipulation, possessiveness and obsession.
Venus, too, ends her six-week retrograde period on June 27 that included that visibly significant Transit of Venus strengthening our feminine foundations for this time. She remains in Gemini the sign of duality, communication, and quick mental workings until early August. Venus and Jupiter, both in early Gemini this summer, will expand our social pleasures, support new learning opportunities, and generate new ideas right and left. The spark of inspiration will be crackling the air waves.
June 29 will FINALLY! mark the move of Mars, warrior planet of action and physical expression, into Libra for the usual 6 weeks journey instead of the long period of Mars in Virgo we have been subjected to for the last eight months due to a long retrograde period. So, best to capitalize on the unimpeded energy as we will have all the personal planets, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Mars, Saturn and Jupiter in forward motion for a couple of weeks until Mercury goes retrograde in mid July (along with Uranus – the two mental planets).
Half way through this culturally significant year of 2012, so much is moving and shifting, it’s hard not to go on and on…
I’ve just realized that Mercury is turning retrograde on Election Day here in the USA. As you can imagine that doesn’t bode well for a smooth, glitch-free election. Mercury retrograde was also present in the 2000 election that went to the Supreme Court decision for George W. Bush. More about that later as the election draws nearer.
Honor the Solstice with simple appreciation and blessings for all the gifts of our planet. Honor the Sun as the Life Giver it is at the powerful point of its yearly peak here in the northern hemisphere. And you in the southern hemisphere can rejoice in the increase of the warmth, light and energy that the Sun provides.
