Jim Ferland, the new chief executive officer of Westinghouse Electric Co., has resigned after two days in the job, the nuclear energy firm’s board of directors announced Tuesday.
Westinghouse board chairman Shigenori Shiga was appointed president and CEO of the Cranberry-based firm on an interim basis.
The board will now consider candidates for the CEO job, and recently promoted Chief Operating Officer Ricardo Perez is a contender, said Scott Shaw, a Westinghouse spokesman. Mr. Ferland is headed to another job that’s expected to be announced today.
Mr. Ferland had served as president of the Americas region at Westinghouse before it was announced he’d take the top job when former CEO Aris Candris retired at the end of March.
The leadership switch-up comes just months after Westinghouse won approval from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to build the first domestic nuclear power plants since the Three Mile Island accident of 1979.
It’s unclear if Mr. Ferland ever officially served as CEO. He assumed the role effective April 1, and notified the board of his resignation “sometime over the weekend,” said Mr. Shaw.
Mr. Shiga, who lives in Japan and has a residence in the Pittsburgh area, started working with Westinghouse when the Toshiba Corp. acquired the company in 2006.
Mr. Shiga is due in town sometime today.
